Folk Tale for September

I introduce Concepts of Print and book vocabulary as I introduce our first     traditional folk tale. We read many, MANY, books with a traditional version, and then we read just about as many NONtraditional versions (including parodies and take offs) They learn to “notice” differences, and to compare and contrast. We do art, retelling with hand puppets, and they each make their own copy of the traditional version which they take home to retell using stick puppets (they each take their own book home to their Special Book Box.)

MY NEW PARODY FAVORITE IS BY MO WILLEMS!!

GOLDILOCKS AND THE 3 DINOSAURS, PUBLISHED SEPT 2012

but it is really too high level for most Kinder classrooms. It is more of a grade 3 and above book as far as understanding the humor.

THE THREE LIBEARIANS IS ANOTHER FAVORITE.

Note: The write up about this unit, including the lessons and the directions for the book and art projects, can be found in my workshop manual.

MY NOTE TO PARENTS RE THIS BOOK:

SPECIAL 3 BEAR Homework:

The purpose of the three bears puppet book is for your child to practice the skill of retelling. please have your child use the puppets to “retell” you the story at least three different times.

ideally... your child wopuld be able to retell it in even more than three different versions... with different beginnings, different endings, different details... sometimes even different voices.

retelling is a regular part of the DRA literacy testing that your child will do over the next 3 years. Each time your child reads or studies a book s/he will be asked to retell. over the course of the year, we do many retellings of folktales. we always compare and contrast versions and encourage students to retell as many versions as they can remember. when they practice retelling these familiar tales it helps them get the idea that a retelling will always include the setting, character names, beginning, middle, end, (or...problem and solution) and any other important details.

the 3 bear books can stay at home now. we will use bear puppets to continue retellings at school.
